Omnicom Philadelphia Showcase 2012

The 2012 Omnicom Philadelphia Showcase

On May 10th, TPG held the 2nd annual Omnicom Philadelphia Showcase at the Comcast Center. We’d like to thank all our guests, especially our esteemed panelists Anna Petric of Google, Jerry Rocha of Nielsen,  Lars Merk of McNeil Consumer Healthcare, and moderator, Alan Rambam of TPG Direct.

In the next few days, we’ll be following up with posts including insights from the event on mobile marketing. For now, check out some photos of the event below:

Everyone is Ready for the Showcase! Almost everyone…

Evie seems  a little preoccupied to attend the Showcase. And Casper is not too please.

“Quatro de Mayo”: TPG’s Mexican Dip Contest

TPG got into the spirit of Cinco de Mayo by hosting its first dip contest where employees entered their homemade Mexican creations of salsa, guacamole, queso, and everything in between. To make this holiday even more authentic in our Philadelphia office, a few piñatas were sacrificed, showering hard candy, Crunch bars, and Baby Ruth’s at innocent bystanders who were too enthralled in the festivities to care. But wait! There’s more. After the candy carnage, traditional salsa music was played and dancing ensued. Who needs a mariachi band when you’ve got Pandora on your phone?

Here are a few entrees who showed off their culinary prowess:

Take a look at the spread! Someone even brought in Mexican Brownies.

World famous luchador, Sin Cuerpo,  made an appearance as a guest judge at the contest. He was quite critical.

Some folks pulled out all the stops by bringing in their own sombreros. Wepa!

The competition was pretty stiff, but after Sin Cuerpo judged over 10 masterful dips, first place went to a Guacamole with goat cheese dip, and second place went to Nancy Bollinger’s “Lime Shrimp” dip. Delicioso!

Congratulations winners! As for everyone else, step up your game for next year’s contest. Hasta mañana!

The City of Brotherly Love: The Next Big Tech Town

Give it up for Philly! Fast Company recently posted an article giving Philadelphia its props as the next big tech town. The City of Brotherly Love takes on technology with open arms as the city’s diverse group of nerds and entrepreneurs pave the way to make Philly the next startup capital.

Companies like InviteMedia, MyYearbook, The Neat Company, and DuckDuckGo “have surged in popularity and refused to emigrate to nearby New York or succumb to the vortex of Silicon Valley”.

A common downside to creating startups in a niche market is that they tend to migrate toward sexier cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York. Philly’s tech talents are finding more lucrative deals in these markets where there is a greater likelihood for success.  But being a big fish in a small pond has its benefits. The ability to stand out among other metropolitan areas in the tech industry is what makes Philadelphia a unique market – unabashed and unafraid.

These entrepreneurs “genuinely love Philadelphia” and for the first time in years, more youth are moving to the beloved, albeit misunderstood city to seek opportunities in technology. With a large number of colleges and universities crawling with hipsters, techies, future business leaders of America, and everyone in between, Philly is expanding its pool of early adopters.

“Philly is the greatest city in the country,” says Sean Blanda, cofounder and writer at the newsblog Technically Philly. “This city is real life. It has real problems and real people, which give us all a tremendous opportunity to make a dent”.

Philadelphia’s tech scene is growing, and with true Philly grit, it’s not going down without a fight.
